On the Occasion of a Wedding Eclectic Love Poems Ollie Bowen 9781733835800 Books Reviews

  • Few things could be more appropriate as a gift for a wedding than a beautiful collection of love poems. On the Occasion of a Wedding Eclectic Love Poems by Ollie Bown is one such example. The collection is broken out into sections Flores Caelesti (heavenly flowers),Caelo Marique (sky and sea),Amor Insanus (crazy love),Pluit et Lucet (rains and shines). For those embarking on a new marriage, and for those who have entered marriage, endured, and prospered through marriage, this is a bold collection that captures all of the emotions that encapsulate those specific times in marriage and life that are the most memorable and revealing. Heartfelt and emotional, sometimes funny, and always with captivating language, Bowen has created a one of a kind collection that will resonate and astound. Highly recommend for an immersive read, but especially for those taking a chance with marriage and devotion.
  • Ollie Bowen’s thoughtfulness to a friend results in On the Occasion of a Wedding Eclectic Love Poems. Ollie covers many areas of a relationship; the gratitude of a bride for the groom’s mother, friendship, times when things are not always a bed of roses, emotional love, and physical love. These poems don’t rhyme, but the words blend and flow to complete a picture the author wishes to convey to the reader.

I found On the Occasion of a Wedding Eclectic Love Poems sweet as Ollie Bowen views nature and compares it to love. Devote readers of poetry will read this short book with zeal and fervor. Veil of the Jellyfish would have been my favorite as it talks about the different aspects a wife reveals and the distinctive place she has in his life and universe.
  • I began reading this collection with a thousand distractions pulling my attention away. But by the third or fourth poem, everything else faded away. It is divided into sections, each of them thoughtfully crafted and unified with common themes. This book feels like a journey almost. As if the beginning was what we need to hear about marriage and ending with what we can learn from marriage.

A few of my favorites are “Monarchs”, “The Prudent Gardeners”, “The Woman Who Fell In Love With The Moon”, and “Invective Against Dead Squids.” There is one line that jumped out at me that I’m sure I’ll carry with me long after posting this review in which it reads “is not poetry a secret language - a sigh answering a sigh?” For me this one sentence captures what poetry is for me. It can be loud and boastful but it may also be tender and laced within whispers. Ollie Bowen captures this beautifully.

My one recommendation is that this book may not be suitable for young readers as it does contain explicit pieces, but my Lord, everyone of those pieces was elegant, beautifully penned, and most of the time had me laughing.

I would recommend this book for readers of poetry who want to understand what marriage can be, for the readers who maybe want a quick read, and for those who find themselves questioning their relationships.

    5/5 would recommend. Well done!
  • California author Ollie Bowen, with degrees in education, science and business, is not only a scholar, she is also a poet. This appears to be her first publication of her poetry and it is an impressive debut!

Ollie labels this collection as ‘eclectic love poems’ and adds a note of sensitivity with the titles of sections in this collection - Flores Caelesti (heavenly flowers), Caelo Marique (sky and sea), Amor Insanus (crazy love), and Pluit et Lucet (rains and shines) – reminders of her scholarly background! The poems detail the bliss, the spiritual heights, the passion, the lust, the humor, and the madness of love in a manner that can only be appreciated by reading the collection cover to cover. Examples hint at the content

    QUANTA QUALIA

    i’ve spent years contemplating
    how to adequately describe
    the raw feeling of you

    but no combination of
    one hundred thousand words
    can capture eve
    the slightest quanta

    do we love, or
am I but a blue tangerine?

    the answer the reality
    no longer matter

for I was unconscious before you
    and now I am divine

    EVERYTHING
    all we
    ever had
    was everything

And so the flow of love in all its aspects is embraced by a new poet of distinction. The rewards of this collection are many. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 19
